Rising gun and gang violence in some German cities, Berlin in particular, increasingly finds coverage in German media with establishments like restaurants or night clubs being targeted in shooting attacks or thrown hand grenades at while rival criminal gangs that violently clash on streets extort business owners and hitmen are flown in from other countries including Türkiye to carry out these crimes.
Information available indicates that the German Police established a special investigation unit to look into these crimes and was specifically seeking to trace the weapons used in the attacks.
Experts point out to the importance of identifying the origin of the weapons used in the shooting incidents suggesting that they had likely been smuggled into Germany as procuring weapons inside the country was impossible.
In the meanwhile, the incident that transpired on the Turkish-Greek border in October 2025 offers an interesting piece of information on how the weapons actually found their way into Europe. To be more precise, a group of FETO members who had been arrested in their attempt to illegally enter Greece in October 2025 around Sofulu area of Meriç, Türkiye were found to be in possession of some 150 handguns and approximately 200 magazines. Investigation by the Greek Police revealed that FETO members, enjoying and exploiting the ease of unhindered movement that comes with their ‘political refugee’ status, were effectively collaborating with criminal organizations and ensuring the delivery of the weapons, ammunition and drugs owned by criminal gangs first to Greece then further deeper into Western Europe by taking advantage of the lax border controls within the European Union.
We note in acute awareness at this point in time that ‘illegality is contagious’ as repeatedly highlighted by F-watch.net in various publications and ‘terrorist organizations and organized crime networks learn from each other’s best practices and help out one another by sharing their capabilities’.
We do hope that European governments, Germany in particular, would open their eyes to the threat potential of FETO and take due measures before it is too late.
